Towards EU and Nordic level networking, NordAqua is working in close collaboration with several accompanying projects / consortia listed below.

SUNRISE is one of six candidates for a future European large-scale research initiative that has been selected by the European Commission in the Horizon2020 call “FETFLAG-01-2018”. SUNRISE proposes a sustainable alternative to the fossil-based, energy-intensive production of fuels and base chemicals. The needed energy will be provided by sunlight, the raw materials will be molecules abundantly available in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen.

SIMBA is a €10.5 million European Union Horizon 2020-funded Innovation Action project that has the vision to create a better EU Agro-Aqua-Food system using microbiomes that is resource efficient, climate resilient, sustainable and consumer centred.  To do this, over the four-year project, SIMBA will explore and utilise microbiomes from the land and sea to develop numerous innovative solutions to address key challenges identified.

SIMBA project brings together 23 partners well distributed across the European continent and two of these partners, LUKE and NIVA are also members of NordAqua consortium.

SmartBio is NordAqua´s sister project. SmartBio “Advanced Bioresources and Smart Bioproducts – Towards Sustainable Bioeconomy” is a BioCity Turku research programme consists of active, multidisciplinary research groups from the University of Turku and from the Åbo Akademi University.

The current strategic profiling of both the University of Turku and the Åbo Akademi University involves the research groups of the “Advanced Bioresources and Smart Bioproducts” program, thus emphasizing the commitment from the universities side to support the aims of the SmartBio.
